The Hudsucker Proxy

The future is now and as we leave 2020, the future can't get here fast enough. We're ringing in the new year with the Coen Brothers' idiosyncratic homage to Hollywood comedies of yesteryear, The Hudsucker Proxy. Listen as we fall (fail) into the verbal, narrative, and literal circles of the screenplay, examine the film's simultaneously idealistic and cynical look at American industry, and decode the symbolism in the movie's sterling production design and costuming. Warning: Contains explicit language, spoilers, and an extruded plastic dingus.

So are we actually talking about Glengarry Glen Ross, David Mamet's searing drama of capitalism, corruption, and closers, or are we just speaking about it? Listen as we examine how the Pulitzer prize-winning play was translated to film, discuss the atmosphere of toxic masculinity in the Premiere Properties office, and find a new mantra to live by... Movie In-Jokes: Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday

One of the fun games when watching movies is to spot references, secret messages, and gags that filmmakers, film crews, and actors can slip into movies to pay tribute to films they love, have a bit of fun with their previous work, or give the cinematic equivalent of a shout-out. Here's a spotter's guide to these inside jokes.

As Halloween approaches, we see that our old hockey-mask clad friend Jason Voorhees exists in a bigger and even scarier world than we imagined as revealed by these two references in the (sort-of) final Jason film, Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday.

Movie Art Gallery: Darkman

The art of motion pictures isn't limited to what's on the screen. Even the materials used to sell and promote a movie can be amazing works of art in their own right. This is particularly true of movie posters, which can become iconic not only for their aesthetic qualities but in how they represent a movie's story, mood, and themes. So, let's get the one-sheet out of the movie theater lobby and put it on display where it belongs... in our cinematic art gallery.

For this inaugural entry, we'll examine the poster for Sam Raimi's dark superhero flick Darkman, as painted by John Alvin.
