Fantastic Planet - Supplement

While we try to cover as much as we can in our episodes, there's always more to see, hear, and read about a movie that can enhance your viewing experience. If you enjoyed our episode on Fantastic Planet, here's a few extra bits you might find interesting...


First of course is the trailer with a particularly spaced-out sounding voice-over:



Laloux's collaboration with artist Roland Topor began with several short films. First was Les Temps Morts, or Dead Times:



This was followed by Les Escargots:



As we mentioned, Topor was a diverse artist; illustrator, author, filmmaker, and actor. Here are a few moments of his crazed performance as Renfield in Werner Herzog's remake of Nosferatu:


Following Fantastic Planet and his creative split with Topor, Laloux made several other animated sci-fi features, the most prominent in America being Gandahar, renamed Light Years in the U.S. and featuring an adaptation by author Isaac Asimov. Here's the whole film:



Finally, as we mentioned, the film's composer, Alain Goraguer, is also a hell of a jazz pianist. Here's a clip of him showing off his talents:
